RP Graphite Electrode for Eaf Description
The function of graphite electrodes is to facilitate the transfer of electrical energy from the power supply to the steel melt in the electric arc furnace (EAF) bath. The electrodes are typically manufactured using premium petroleum needle coke, coal tar pitch, and a selection of additives.
Graphite electrodes represent the principal heating element employed in an electric arc furnace, a steelmaking process whereby scrap derived from discarded automobiles or domestic appliances is melted in order to produce new steel.
The construction costs of electric arc furnaces are less than those of traditional blast furnaces, which produce steel from iron ore and are fuelled by coking coal. However, the cost of steel production is higher due to the use of steel scrap and the reliance on electricity as a fuel source.
