Main Factors Of Graphite Electrode Consumption In Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking

 

1.1 Poor quality or improper ratio of scrap steel can lead to ineffective slag formation, extending the smelting time. Increased frequency of charging and borehole wear raises the likelihood of damage and breakage at the electrode base. Extended smelting times directly result in higher power consumption and increased electrode wear and loss.

 

1.2 Mismatch between electric furnace power supply equipment and electrode specifications
Electric arc furnaces operate with high current and low voltage. If the power supply equipment's capacity exceeds the electrode's maximum load, the electrodes will turn red from the bottom up within 5-10 minutes of arcing, with a clear demarcation at the joints, often leading to breakage. Excessive current or large fluctuations increase the frequency of breakage at the joints and cause conical wear at the base. If the power supply is insufficient, the furnace temperature won't reach the required level within the effective heating period, necessitating prolonged operation. Overloading and extended operation significantly increase the loss and consumption of graphite electrodes.

 

1.3 Increasing chemical energy and refining intensity during the oxidation period
Forcing an increase in oxygen blowing (generally less than 45M³/T) during smelting to achieve rapid melting and higher furnace temperatures can worsen furnace conditions and create a rich state inside and above the furnace, exposing each electrode to high-temperature flames. In this environment, electrodes often suffer from severe surface oxidation and delamination.

 

1.4 Technical aspects of electric furnace configuration and operation
Modern electric arc furnaces differ fundamentally from traditional ones. The advent of ultra-high power, large-scale electric arc furnaces and hot metal charge steelmaking processes have increased refining intensity and productivity, imposing higher technical demands on graphite electrode quality. Key factors affecting electrode lifespan and consumption include the choice of power curve and gear settings during operation, control of arcing and steady arc voltage and current, coordinated use of long, medium, and short arcs, and the configuration and application of water cooling systems.
