What Is Steelmaking Deoxidizer

A deoxidizer for steelmaking, as the name implies, is a substance used during the steel production process. It is typically added to molten steel to facilitate smooth casting and rolling into high-quality steel. A specific quantity of deoxidizer is utilized for the deoxidation process, and an appropriate amount of alloy is incorporated to modify the chemical composition to comply with steel grade requirements.

Types of Deoxidizers for Steelmaking:
Commonly used deoxidizers include silicon-manganese alloy, ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, silicon-calcium alloy, and silicon-aluminum-barium-calcium.

Functions of the Deoxidizer:
1. It is effective for deoxidizing various types of steel production, particularly converter steelmaking. It exhibits strong deoxidation and desulfurization capabilities, enhances the fluidity of molten steel, and addresses issues related to nodules.
2. It helps lower the gas content in steel and minimizes the number of inclusions in molten steel. The fundamental principle is that the calcium in the deoxidizer converts oxides in the molten steel into low-melting-point deoxidation products that easily float to the surface, thereby purifying the molten steel. Additionally, the application process is straightforward, allowing for increased alloy addition rates and reduced alloy consumption, which lowers the cost of steel raw materials and enhances product quality, yielding significant economic and social benefits. When used in electric furnaces for reducing deoxidation, it can substitute for silicon powder, silicon, aluminum, and barium, significantly cutting down steel smelting costs.

Instructions for Using a Deoxidizer in Steel Smelting:
1. The quantity of the additive is based on the carbon content of the final molten steel, typically ranging from 1.0 to 1.5 kg per ton of steel.
2. Application method: Add the deoxidizer directly to the bottom of the ladle before pouring.
3. When removing 1/4 of the steel, add ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, and aluminum as usual. The deoxidizer for steelmaking is highly effective in deoxidation and desulfurization and can significantly improve the fluidity of molten steel.
