Vanadium(V) oxide (V₂O₅) has many important industrial and technological applications because of its strong oxidizing ability, catalytic activity, and semiconducting properties.
1. Catalyst in the Contact Process (most important use)
Used as a catalyst in the manufacture of sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
It catalyzes the oxidation of SO₂ → SO₃ efficiently.
This is the largest industrial application of V₂O₅.
2. Oxidizing agent in chemical reactions
Reduces to lower oxides of vanadium (like V₂O₄) while oxidizing other species.
Useful in oxidation reactions in both inorganic and organic chemistry.
3. Manufacturing of alloys
Used to produce ferrovanadium, an important alloying agent in steel production.
Increases hardness, strength, and resistance to corrosion.
4. Glass and ceramics industry
Added to glass and ceramic glazes to provide yellow, green, or blue colors.
Improves the optical properties of certain glasses.
5. Batteries and energy storage
Used in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), a type of large-scale energy storage system.
Also investigated as a cathode material in lithium-ion batteries.
6. Electronics and sensors
V₂O₅ is a semiconductor.
Used in gas sensors, electrochromic devices, and thin films for electronic applications.
