Development status of titanium alloys

1. The processing technology needs to be improved

Because titanium has high chemical activity at high temperatures and is easily contaminated by oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and other elements, the processing and manufacturing process of titanium alloys is very demanding. Therefore, the manufacturing cost of titanium alloy materials is very expensive and its application fields are limited. Currently, it is mostly used in high-tech industries such as aircraft structures, aircraft, petroleum and chemical industries.

The poor rigidity and thermal conductivity of titanium alloy can cause local high temperatures and cause sticking, etc., making the processing process more difficult. Usually the processability of titanium alloy is only 20% to 40% of that of 45 steel. If the hardness is <HB300, the tool will stick badly; if HB>370, it is too hard and difficult to process. In addition, titanium has high chemical activity and can easily combine with gas impurities. When the temperature exceeds 600°C, titanium is oxidized into a brittle layer and reacts with hydrogen to produce hydrogen embrittlement; it forms hard and brittle titanium nitride (xiN) with nitrogen at high temperatures, which aggravates tool wear. In addition, titanium alloys can chemically combine with elements of tool materials, causing severe bonding wear.

2. Research and development of high-end products with high added value

At present, titanium alloy processing enterprises also have low technical level and overcapacity. Therefore, enterprises need to increase their innovation efforts and produce high-end products with high added value to provide enterprises with strong competition.

3. Industry standards

The manufacturing process of titanium alloys and their products has high requirements, and the requirements for production equipment and processing equipment are also very high. There are also certain difficulties in product quality control. Therefore, there is currently a lack of standardized industry standards for the application of titanium materials. This means that the quality control of titanium alloys and their products cannot meet unified requirements, resulting in uneven product quality, which is extremely detrimental to the expansion of the application fields of titanium alloys.
