Silicon Metal Description
Most recycled silicon is used to make iron and steel. Ferrosilicon can contain 15 to 90% silicon. Iron and silicon are melted together. Ore and carbon are crushed and put into a furnace with scrap iron. At temperatures above 1900°C, carbon reacts with oxygen in the ore to form carbon monoxide. The remaining iron and silicon form a liquid called ferrosilicon, which can be collected from the bottom of the furnace. Once cooled, ferrosilicon can be shipped and used in the production of iron and steel. The same method is used to produce silicon with a purity of more than 99 percent. Silicon is also used in steel smelting, aluminium cast alloys, and silane chemicals.
