Manganese is one of the most important alloying elements in steel materials. Manganese is capable of altering a wide range of properties of steel materials such as strength, hardness, toughness, wear resistance and heat resistance. Manganese in iron and steel materials is mainly obtained by adding ferromanganese alloys to their melts.
Ferromanganese can be classified as high carbon, medium carbon and low carbon ferromanganese due to its carbon content. Among them, high carbon ferromanganese is strictly limited due to its high carbon content, which significantly increases the carbon content of steel when added to iron and steel materials. Low carbon ferromanganese does not have the same problem as high carbon ferromanganese due to its lower carbon content, so low carbon ferromanganese is more widely used than high carbon ferromanganese and is an important raw material for the production of stainless steel, heat-resistant cast steel, heat-resistant cast iron, wear-resistant steel and structural steel.
In the past, the production of low carbon ferromanganese is mainly through the liquid high carbon ferromanganese melt oxygen blowing decarburisation to make high carbon ferromanganese into low carbon ferromanganese, and then silicon manganese alloy to reduce the peroxide melt to improve the yield of manganese. The high carbon ferromanganese liquid oxidative decarburisation method is complicated, high cost and serious pollution to the environment.
