Why is ferrosilicon an essential deoxidizer in steelmaking?

Because ferrosilicon contains a high content of silicon and because silicon has a strong affinity for oxygen, the following deoxygenation reaction occurs when ferrosilicon is added to steelmaking: 2FeO+Si=2Fe+SiO₂.

Silicon dioxide is a product of the deoxygenation reaction of ferrosilicon. It is lighter than steel. It floats on the surface of the steel and enters the slag, thus removing oxygen from the steel. It significantly improves the strength, hardness, and elasticity of steel, increases its permeability, lowers the temperature of the transformer, and reduces hysteresis losses in steel.

Therefore ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidiser for steelmaking and can be used for precipitation deoxidization and diffusion deoxidization. Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can improve the strength, hardness, and elasticity of steel.
