You can make electrolytic manganese by leaching manganese ore with acid, and it's usually 99.7% pure. It looks like iron, is irregularly shaped, hard and transparent, and one side is light and the other is rough. After processing into powder, it goes from silvery-white to brown and silvery-grey. It oxidises easily in air, dissolves and displaces hydrogen in the presence of dilute acid, dissolves water, and releases hydrogen at a temperature slightly above room temperature.
