Producing high-quality ferrovanadium requires a meticulous blend of metallurgical expertise and advanced engineering, spanning multiple stages from raw material extraction to final alloy refinement. The process begins with vanadium-rich feedstocks, primarily sourced from magnetite ores (common in China, Russia, and South Africa) or steelmaking slag-a byproduct of iron production containing 8–15% vanadium oxides.​

Raw ores are first crushed and concentrated via magnetic separation to increase vanadium content. For slag-based feedstocks, crushing and screening remove impurities before roasting in a rotary kiln at 800–900°C. This roasting converts vanadium into water-soluble sodium vanadate, which is then leached with water or dilute acid to form a vanadium-rich solution. Precipitation techniques, such as ammonium sulfate addition, isolate vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) as a yellow powder, achieving purity levels above 98%.​
