Silicon carbide 65 is a cost-controlled silicon-carbon material used for ordinary casting, rough steelmaking and basic slag reduction.
It contains SiC 65% min and F.C. 15–20%, with controlled Al impurity, sulfur, phosphorus, moisture and particle size.
For non-special steel production, SiC 65 is often more practical than high-grade SiC 88 or SiC 90. It provides basic deoxidation and fixed carbon contribution without adding unnecessary purchase cost.

What Is Silicon carbide 65 Used For?
Application in Ordinary Casting
In ordinary casting, the furnace often needs silicon input, carbon adjustment and slag cleaning in the same heat.
A typical gray iron workshop may use ferrosilicon for silicon adjustment and recarburizer for carbon increase. When the product grade allows it, silicon carbide 65 can support both parts of the recipe.
Its SiC 65% min helps with deoxidation and reduction. Its F.C. 15–20% contributes usable carbon. This means the operator should calculate SiC 65 together with the original recarburizer amount.
If the recarburizer addition is not adjusted, the final carbon may run higher than target. If it is adjusted correctly, SiC 65 can help reduce total additive cost.
For ordinary castings, this is the main reason to choose SiC 65: it is not the purest grade, but it can be the more economical grade.
Application in Rough Steelmaking
In rough steelmaking, SiC 65 is commonly used for basic deoxidation and slag reduction.
After oxygen blowing, slag may contain higher FeO. When FeO remains high, alloy recovery becomes unstable, and more correction alloy may be needed before tapping.
In this case, SiC 65 can be added during the reduction stage. Silicon and fixed carbon work together to reduce part of the oxidizing slag and improve slag condition.
For plants making ordinary carbon steel, this matters because the furnace does not need expensive high-grade SiC for every heat. A stable silicon carbide alloy with 65% SiC can be enough for rough reduction work.
