Silicon carbide (SIC88) was fortuitously identified by American scientist Acheson during the 1891 experiment to create fused diamonds. At that time, he incorrectly identified it as a mixture of diamonds and thus named it emery.

Acheson developed the product in 1893. The industrial smelting method of silicon carbide, also known as the Acheson furnace, remains in use today. The resistance furnace utilises carbonaceous materials as the furnace core, energising the mixture of quartz (SiO₂) and carbon to generate silicon carbide.

Black silicon carbide contains approximately 95% SiC and exhibits superior toughness compared to green silicon carbide. It is primarily employed in the processing of materials with low tensile strength, including glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.

The abrasive tools used to manufacture this product are suitable for ultra-finishing bearings, with the ability to achieve surface roughness from Ra32 ~ 0.16 microns to Ra0.04 ~ 0.02 microns.
