F8 Silicon Carbide

The  Black Silicon Carbide has a crystal structure, is highly hard, has excellent cutting ability, stable chemical properties and good thermal conductivity. Its microscopic shape is that of a hexagonal crystal. Silicon carbide has a Mohs hardness of 9.2, a Vickers microhardness of 3000–3300 kg/mm², a Knoop hardness of 2670–2815 kg/mm, and a microhardness of 3300 kg/cubic millimetre.

In the context of abrasives, its hardness rating is higher than that of corundum and second only to diamond, cubic boron nitride and boron carbide. The typical density is 3.20 g/cm³. The natural packing density of silicon carbide abrasives is between 1.2 and 1.6 g/mm³, with a specific gravity of 3.20 to 3.25. Green silicon carbide is manufactured from petroleum coke and high-quality silica as the primary raw materials, with salt added as an additive, and smelted at a high temperature in a resistance furnace. Its hardness is between that of corundum and diamond, and its mechanical strength is higher than that of corundum.
