Pure silicon carbide abrasive is a colourless and transparent crystalline material. The colour of industrial silicon carbide can range from light yellow to green, blue or even black, depending on the specific type and quantity of impurities present. Its transparency levels also vary in line with the purity of the material. The crystal structure of silicon carbide is divided into hexagonal or rhombohedral α-SiC and cubic β-SiC (called cubic silicon carbide). α-SiC consists of numerous variants due to the varying stacking sequences of carbon and silicon atoms in its crystal structure, with over 70 species having been identified to date. β-SiC undergoes a transformation into α-SiC at temperatures exceeding 2100°C.

The industrial production method of silicon carbide involves the use of high-quality quartz sand and petroleum coke to refine it in a resistance furnace. The silicon carbide blocks are transformed into a variety of products with different particle sizes through a series of processes, including crushing, acid and alkali washing, magnetic separation, screening, and water separation.
