Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, representing approximately 2% by weight. It is also the third most abundant element dissolved in seawater.

Magnesium is a naturally abundant element, occurring in significant quantities in a range of rocky minerals, including dolomite, magnetite, olivine and serpentine.
