Magnesium Ingot Production by Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the process of producing magnesium by electrolyzing magnesium-containing compounds, usually magnesium chloride. The electrolysis method consists of the following steps:
(1) Preparation of raw materials
The main raw material is magnesium chloride (MgCl2), which can be obtained in several ways:
Extraction from seawater: seawater is rich in magnesium ions, which are converted into magnesium chloride by chemical treatment.
Extracted from magnesite: magnesite (MgCO3) is calcined to produce magnesium oxide (MgO), which is then dissolved with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium chloride.
(2) Dehydration
Magnesium chloride needs to be dehydrated before electrolysis because water will decompose during electrolysis and affect the efficiency of electrolysis. Methods of dehydration include heating and drying and chemical dehydration.
(3) Electrolysis
In an electrolyzer, magnesium chloride is melted into a liquid state, and the magnesium and chlorine are separated by the electrolysis process. The electrolyzer is usually made of materials resistant to heat and corrosion, such as carbon or graphite. The chemical equation for the electrolysis reaction is given below: MgCl2→Mg+Cl2
Magnesium precipitates at the cathode and chlorine gas precipitates at the anode.
(4) Collection of magnesium
The liquid magnesium in the electrolyzer solidifies to a solid state by cooling, forming magnesium ingots. The chlorine gas is then collected through special piping and can be recycled or disposed of.
