V2O5 Powder Description

 

Vanadium pentoxide is an amphoteric oxide, but mainly acidic, volatilizing significantly above 700°C. It decomposes to oxygen and vanadium tetraoxide at 700-1125°C, a property that makes it a catalyst for many organic and inorganic reactions. Vanadium pentoxide is a strong oxidizer, easily reduced to a variety of low-value oxides. Vanadium pentoxide is slightly soluble in water and readily forms stable colloidal solutions. Vanadium pentoxide is very soluble in alkali, and can form vanadate (VO-) under weak alkaline conditions. Vanadium pentoxide dissolved in strong acids (generally soluble at pH=2) does not produce vanadate ions but oxyvanadium ions in the same valence state (VO+). Vanadium pentoxide is a toxic substance with a maximum allowable level in air of less than 0.5mg/m³.

Application of vanadium pentoxide

 

The most important application of vanadium pentoxide is as a catalyst for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide in the contact method of sulphuric acid. Further reaction of sulfur trioxide with sulfuric acid gives pyrosulfuric acid, and one pyrosulfuric acid can be added to water to form two sulfuric acids.

The general catalytic reaction takes place at 400-620°C. Below this temperature, vanadium pentoxide is not catalytically active; above this temperature, vanadium pentoxide decomposes. The catalytic mechanism of the reaction is as follows, via a low valence vanadium dioxide intermediate:

 

SO2 + V2O5(s) → SO3(g) + 2 VO2(s)
2 VO2(s) + 1/2 O2(g) → V2O5
