Ferrotitanium, a vital industrial alloy composed primarily of iron and titanium (typically 20-70% titanium by weight), has emerged as a cornerstone material in modern metallurgy. The production of ferrotitanium begins with sourcing raw materials-predominantly ilmenite (FeTiO₃) and rutile (TiO₂), two titanium-rich minerals widely distributed in countries like Australia, South Africa, and China. These ores undergo a series of refining processes, starting with beneficiation to remove impurities before entering smelting furnaces. The two primary production methods are the electric arc furnace (EAF) process and the aluminothermic reduction process. In EAF smelting, ilmenite is melted with carbon or coke as a reducing agent at temperatures exceeding 1,600°C, yielding a titanium-rich alloy. The aluminothermic method, meanwhile, uses aluminum powder as a reductant in exothermic reactions, ideal for producing high-purity ferrotitanium grades. Both processes ensure precise control over titanium content and impurity levels, critical for meeting stringent industrial specifications.
