(1) Carefully select materials. The choice of carbonaceous reducing agent and silica has a great impact on power consumption and output. Sometimes there is a conflict between quality and power consumption, and the pros and cons must be weighed. For example, if more or all petroleum coke is used, the quality will improve, but the power consumption will increase significantly; if more bituminous coal or charcoal is used, the power consumption will be reduced, but the quality will be affected. The power consumption can be reduced by using the method of refining silicon outside the furnace and combining it with some high-resistivity reducing agents such as bituminous coal while ensuring quality. The selection of silica is also very important. We should not only look at the chemical composition of the silica, but also look at the smelting properties, such as thermal stability, reducibility and other indicators.
(2) Produced using large-capacity electric furnaces. From a statistical point of view, the power consumption of electric furnaces above 5000kV A is generally in the range of 12000 to 14000kV A/t. Small electric furnaces have high power consumption due to the large proportion of heat loss, generally in the range of 14000~17000kV A/t. Hanna Mining Company in the United States expanded the capacity of its 9000kV A electric furnace to 12000kV A and achieved good results such as a 12% increase in daily production, an 8% increase in silicon recovery rate, and a 5% reduction in power consumption.
(3) Carefully design the parameters of the electric furnace. Improper selection of electric furnace parameters, such as selecting too high voltage, will increase power consumption. When designing the furnace size, it must be considered that graphite electrodes are used to produce metallic silicon. It is not advisable to calculate the furnace size based on the diameter of the graphite electrode. Instead, the furnace size should be calculated based on the diameter of the carbon electrode. According to the experience of a certain factory, the secondary voltage of the 1800kV A three-phase electric furnace should be 84V, and the pole center circle should be 1150mm.
