Low Sulfur High Carbon Silicon Alloy

High carbon silicon is a recently developed alloy that's being used in the iron and steel industry. It's made up of silicon and carbon. It's got more than 55% silicon and over 15% carbon. It also contains silicon dioxide, phosphorus and sulfur.

It's a by-product of the manufacturing process for metallic silicon. Metallic silicon is made by melting the raw materials in an electric furnace. Sometimes, the electrodes aren't arranged properly, which can lead to uneven heating of the materials. Some silica at the bottom of the furnace doesn't react with the materials like it should. This can lead to lumps of stuff forming at the bottom of the furnace over time.
