Ferrosilicon, a mixture of iron and silicon, is a key component in the production of steel. Silicon (atomic mass 28.086, density 2.33 g/cm3, melting and boiling points 1414 and 2287 °C, respectively) enhances the hardness, strength and elasticity of steel, while also improving its resistance to rust and reducing energy loss.
Ferrosilicon is used to make steel stronger and less prone to rust, as well as to make other types of steel stronger and more heat-resistant.It is also used to give strength to cast iron and modify other types of steel, as well as in metallothermal processes to reduce other metals. The surface of ingots and pieces of ferrosilicon should be free from obvious pieces of slag or other foreign materials, and the amount of fines passing through a 20x20 mm sieve should be no more than 12% of the weight of the batch.Small pieces of welding sand, traces of other non-stick materials and graphite are allowed.
