The primary applications of calcium carbide are the production of acetylene and calcium hydroxide. The reaction of calcium carbide with water results in the formation of these two products.
The acetylene produced from calcium carbide is used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride.
Additionally, calcium carbide is employed in the manufacture of calcium cyanamide. To achieve this, calcium carbide is reacted with nitrogen at a high temperature.
Calcium carbide has a variety of applications in the steelmaking process.
Calcium carbide is used for the desulfurization of iron, as a fuel to increase the scrap ratio to liquid iron, at ladle treatment facilities as a powerful deoxidizer, in carbide lamps, along with calcium phosphide in floating and self-igniting naval signal flares, to determine the amount of moisture in soil, and as a mole repellent.
