Product Introduction

Calcium Carbide for Acetylene Gas Production

We supply calcium carbide in multiple lump sizes for industrial acetylene generation and chemical processing. Calcium carbide, CaC2, reacts with water to release acetylene gas, so gas yield is one of the main purchasing parameters for this material.

When you compare calcium carbide, you should confirm more than the product name. Gas yield, particle size, size distribution, ash, PH3 and H2S limits can all affect your incoming-material specification and acetylene-generation process.

Calcium Carbide Gas Yield by Particle Size

Particle Size Top Grade Gas Yield ≥ A Grade Gas Yield ≥ Accept Grade Gas Yield ≥ Size Percentage Ash ≤
80-120mm 300 L/kg 295 L/kg 280 L/kg ≥90% 1%
50-80mm 300 L/kg 295 L/kg 280 L/kg ≥90% 1%
25-50mm 300 L/kg 295 L/kg 280 L/kg ≥90% 1%
15-25mm 300 L/kg 285 L/kg 260 L/kg ≥90% 1%
7-15mm 290 L/kg 270 L/kg 250 L/kg ≥90% 1%
4-7mm 280 L/kg 260 L/kg 240 L/kg ≥90% 1%
2-4mm 260 L/kg 240 L/kg 220 L/kg ≥90% 1%

The listed gas-yield values are measured at 20°C and 101.3 kPa. When gas yield is an acceptance-critical parameter, confirm the required test condition and minimum value in the purchase specification.

Calcium Carbide PH3 and H2S Limits

Gas yield alone does not define calcium carbide quality. The impurities released with acetylene can also matter to downstream gas quality and process control.

Gas Impurity Listed Maximum
PH3 ≤ 0.08% (V/V)
H2S ≤ 0.10% (V/V)

If your acetylene process uses tighter PH3 or H2S limits, send us the maximum values before quotation so we can confirm whether the required specification is available.

How Calcium Carbide Produces Acetylene

Calcium carbide reacts with water to form acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide:

CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2

This reaction is the reason gas yield is used as a commercial quality parameter for calcium carbide.

If you want more detail on the reaction mechanism and by-products, see our calcium carbide and water reaction explanation .

Because moisture starts the reaction and releases flammable acetylene, calcium carbide must be protected from water and uncontrolled moisture during storage and handling.

For additional handling background, you can also read our calcium carbide handling precautions .

Choosing Calcium Carbide Particle Size

Particle size should be selected together with gas yield rather than treated as a cosmetic specification.

The current page lists sizes from 2-4mm up to 80-120mm. Different size ranges can be selected according to your feeding system and acetylene-generation equipment.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • required minimum and maximum lump size;
  • acceptable size percentage;
  • required gas yield;
  • acceptable fines;
  • ash limit;
  • your actual acetylene-generation process.

If your process commonly uses a medium lump range, you can also compare our 20-50mm Calcium Carbide 295L/kg specification before selecting the final size and gas-yield target.

Calcium Carbide Storage and Moisture Control

Moisture control is a critical part of calcium carbide purchasing and storage because CaC2 begins reacting when exposed to water.

For shipment and warehouse planning, you should confirm that the packing and storage arrangement keeps the material dry and protects it from uncontrolled moisture exposure.

Your internal handling procedure should also account for the fact that acetylene generated from accidental moisture contact is flammable.

Always follow the applicable product SDS, local regulations and your facility's chemical-handling procedures.

Calcium Carbide Quality and Batch Confirmation

We inspect material before shipment and can align batch-control items with your agreed specification.

For calcium carbide orders, you can confirm:

  • particle size;
  • minimum gas yield;
  • size percentage;
  • ash content;
  • PH3 and H2S limits;
  • batch identification and COA requirement.

If 305 L/kg is your minimum acceptance requirement, state it explicitly so the value can be confirmed before order approval.

Calcium Carbide Gas Yield FAQ

Q1: What does calcium carbide gas yield mean?
Gas yield indicates the volume of acetylene generated from a defined mass of calcium carbide under the specified test conditions.

Q2: Does the current table confirm 305 L/kg?
No. The currently published table lists values up to 300 L/kg. If you require 305 L/kg, send us that minimum so we can confirm the available batch specification before quotation.

Q3: Which particle sizes are listed?
The current ranges are 2-4mm, 4-7mm, 7-15mm, 15-25mm, 25-50mm, 50-80mm and 80-120mm.

Q4: What are the listed PH3 and H2S limits?
The current specification lists PH3 ≤0.08% (V/V) and H2S ≤0.10% (V/V).

Q5: Why must calcium carbide be protected from moisture?
Because CaC2 reacts with water and releases flammable acetylene gas. Keep storage and handling aligned with the current SDS and your facility's chemical-safety procedures.

Q6: What payment terms are available?
The current page lists T/T, D/P and L/C. Final payment terms should be confirmed in the quotation and sales contract.
