The most well-known and common of these is calcium carbide, which is written as CaC2 in chemistry.
The synthesis of calcium carbide entails the presence of two essential components: calcium oxide (CaO), also known as quicklime, and carbon compounds such as coke (anthracite, coal).
The reaction that occurs is as follows:CaO + 3C = CaC2 +CO
Both components are then crushed, followed by roasting and melting using the electric arc method.
The resultant mixture is then solidified, followed by a second crushing and sorting process.
It is noteworthy that the formation of calcium carbide necessitates a minimum temperature of 1619°C. However, the process is typically carried out at a temperature ranging from 1900 to 1950°C. As the temperature increases, calcium carbide undergoes decomposition into metal and carbon.
