Silicon nitride ceramics are durable, conduct heat well, and do not change shape much when heated or cooled. Compared to silica, nitride in the amorphous state has a higher concentration of electron and hole traps (about 10-19 cm-3), with these traps being relatively deep (about 1.5 eV). This allows silicon nitride to be used as an efficient memory device: the electrons and holes injected into it are captured by traps and can remain in them for about 10 years at a temperature of 85 °C.

 

In addition, silicon nitride has a high dielectric constant (7) compared to oxide (3,9), so it is used as an insulator in a number of devices.
