Magnesium has a long history of use in the production of photographic flash ribbon and powder. Its ability to burn in air with an intense white light, when finely divided, makes it an ideal material for this purpose. It is still used in the manufacture of explosive and pyrotechnic devices. Due to its low density (only two-thirds that of aluminium), magnesium has become a widely used material in the aerospace industry. However, the structural strength of the pure metal is low, so magnesium is mainly used in the form of alloys. These are primarily composed of 10 percent or less of aluminium, zinc, and manganese. This allows the metal to be cast, welded, and machined more easily, while also improving its hardness and tensile strength. The alloys are produced using casting, rolling, extruding, and forging techniques, and the resulting sheet, plate, or extrusion is then fabricated using standard forming, joining, and machining operations. Magnesium is the most readily machinable structural metal and is frequently selected when a large number of machining operations are required. Magnesium alloys are used in a number of applications, including aircraft, spacecraft, machinery, automobiles, portable tools, and household appliances.
Magnesium is a powerful reducing agent, and is used to produce other metals from their compounds (e.g. titanium, zirconium, and hafnium). It reacts directly with a number of elements.
