The process of making Silicon Metal 2202 starts with the careful selection of quartzite and reducing agents. The purity of these affects how much energy is needed to melt them down, and the final product's impurity profile. The submerged arc furnace, which can reach temperatures of over 2000°C, is an amazing example of industrial pyro-metallurgy. Here, silica (SiO2) is reduced by carbon to produce molten silicon and carbon monoxide gas. The tapped silicon is then refined, often using ladle refining techniques, to remove any unwanted elements. It is then cooled, crushed, and screened into different particle sizes (lump, granules, powder). Finally, it is prepared for shipment. This whole process needs a lot of money and expertise to make sure it's both economical and high-quality.
