The production of ferrovanadium mainly involves two key methods: the electro - thermal process and the aluminothermic process. Each process has its own characteristics and is selected based on factors such as raw material availability, production scale, and energy consumption.​ In the electro - thermal process, vanadium - bearing ores or slags are mixed with coke and other reducing agents, then fed into an electric arc furnace. High - temperature electricity is used to heat the mixture, enabling the reduction of vanadium oxides to metallic vanadium. The iron in the raw materials combines with vanadium during the process, forming ferrovanadium. This method is suitable for large - scale production and can handle a wide range of vanadium - bearing materials. However, it requires a significant amount of electrical energy, increasing production costs.​

The aluminothermic process, on the other hand, uses aluminum as the reducing agent. This process is relatively energy - efficient and can produce high - purity ferrovanadium. But it has limitations in terms of production scale and raw material requirements.​ Both processes need strict control of reaction conditions, such as temperature, reaction time, and the ratio of raw materials, to ensure the quality and yield of ferrovanadium. Advanced refining techniques are also often applied to further purify the alloy and meet different industrial demands.
