Ferrosilicon is a mix of silicon and iron. It's got between 15 and 90% silicon in it. You'll find it's used a lot in the metallurgical industry, especially when making steel and cast iron. Its main job is to improve how strong and resistant to corrosion metals are.
It's made in electric furnaces at around 1500 to 2000 degrees Celsius. There are different grades of ferrosilicon, depending on the amount of silicon in it, such as FeSi75 and FeSi90. For example, FeSi75 contains about 75% silicon and is used for mixing with steels, as well as for reducing the oxygen and sulfur content of metals.
Ferrosilicon is also important for the production of ferroalloys, which are used to improve the quality of final metal products.
