The performance of high-speed steels (HSS) used in cutting tools is significantly improved by the addition of ferro vanadium 80.Tools like drills, milling cutters and broaches need to be very hard and resistant to wear to keep a sharp cutting edge at the high temperatures created during machining. Vanadium makes very hard and thermally stable MC-type carbides, which are better at resisting abrasion than carbides made from other elements. A higher vanadium content allows HSS grades to machine materials like composite woods, fiberglass, and high-temperature alloys more effectively.
